The San Francisco 49ers<\/a> don\u2019t need to sign Brock Purdy<\/a> to a big-time contract extension.<\/p>\n

They can essentially place him under the franchise tag next season and then the following year as well, and keep him around in a cost-controlled and team-friendly situation.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, that\u2019s not what they want to do.<\/p>\n

While reports state that they\u2019re not willing to give him as much money as he\u2019s demanding, the Niners can do right by him and get him signed to a long-term deal with some financial security.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, GM John Lynch revealed that both parties have been in constant talks about this situation, and it seems like it should be just a matter of time before there\u2019s a positive development:<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I can tell you, we\u2019ve made it a practice not to talk about negotiations,\u201d Lynch said<\/a>. \u201cBut what I will tell you and can tell you is we\u2019re having really good, positive discussions. When it gets done, I\u2019m not sure. Hope sooner rather than later, but hope is not a strategy. So, we\u2019re making progress. We\u2019ve had good discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Needless to say, Purdy has earned his stripes and his money, and he might be the biggest bargain in the entire league right now.<\/p>\n

He led the team to the Super Bowl after being the very last pick in the NFL Draft, and his movie-like story is just getting started.<\/p>\n

Then again, it\u2019s also worth noting that signing him to a market-caliber deal could also have disastrous implications for this team.<\/p>\n

As impressive as he has been when things have gone his way, he has also struggled mightily<\/a> when his star weapons have been absent.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not the most physically imposing quarterback either.<\/p>\n

Even so, the Niners have seen more than enough to realize whether he\u2019s their guy for the future or not.<\/p>\n
